Peggy Harding, known by her wartime contacts as Pam Mackan has died, aged 103 in a care home in Torquay, Devon, having broken her hip in a fall last year.

Born in Bristol and educated at Clifton High School she graduated from Bristol University with a degree in French and German and enlisted in the Wrens in January 1943  joining Special Duties (Linguists) Y Section, serving first at Withernsea, Yorkshire and then at Abbotscliff near Folkestone, which is where she was on watch on  D-Day. She was then seconded to SHAEF, first in Versailles, France and then Frankfurt, Germany where she was working for US Intelligence G2, now with the rank of 3rd Officer. Her final posting was to Hanover, working for the British Military Government.

Peggy  married Geoffrey Harding in December 1946 and they  lived first in Bristol and then in North Somerset until Geoffrey retired in 1981 when they moved to Torquay. She retained her facility with languages, passing Italian O Level, continued academic studies at adult education classes and was an active member of the Women’s Institute. Together with Pat Davies (nee Owtram) she organised Y Service Reunions.

In recent years she contributed to several books on the Wrens (eg Bletchley Park’s Secret Source by Peter Hore and Les femmes de la Royal Navy by Genevieve Moulard). She was interviewed several times by the BBC and ITV and, being supported in her sight loss by Blind Veterans UK, featured in their D-Day promotions.

She will be much missed by her family and friends.
