Margaret Ward , a wartime Wren Died at the age of 99 on March 1st 2025

Margaret was born on January 26th 1926 and served in the WRENS from around 1943 to 1946. She was stationed in Falmouth in the period up to and following D-Day. She always described this period as the happiest and most fulfilling of her life, though she remembered the great sadness she felt seeing the troops embarking for the invasion.

She maintained her service friendships throughout her life, in particular with four girls with whom she formed a particularly close bond. She was sad to see this little band dwindle over the years, until only she and one close friend, Miriam Tod (née Cobb) – who had emigrated to the US after the war – remained alive. And by an extraordinary coincidence, she and Miriam died on the same day.

Photos are of Margaret and her 5 friends, including a copy of an article which appeared in the Wren magazine in 2000, about the lifelong friendship of the five girls.
