Irene ‘Renee’ Causer

17 July 1923 to 15 August 2023

Renee lived in Preston and joined the WRNS during WWII serving 1942 -1946 in the Fleet Air Arm. Her training was carried out in London but she was then transferred back to Lancashire to serve at HMS Inskip. She also served at Machrihansh and Donibristle, in Scotland. She remembers being taken on leave by submarine as there was no other transport leaving from Campbelltown to Glasgow. Due to there being Wrens onboard the submarine had to stay above the water for the whole journey, as it was believed to be a risk to female health if not! She also has a photo of her and the Queen changing a tyre.

Renee joined the informal Lytham St Anne’s Wrens group after her friend Marjory, who is 5 months older than her, told us she had a friend who had been a war-time Wren. They both recently celebrated their 100th birthdays and were presented with a certificate and a bouquet of flowers by the Mayor of Poulton at a small civic function put on in their honour.

She will be greatly missed by family, friends and Lytham St Anne’s Informal Group.
