A few memories about Mum – written by Mandy

My mum was born in Kent on September 28th 1932.  She joined the Wrens in 1952. In 1953 she became Stenographer to the Commander in Chief Mediterranean Fleet, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, she thoroughly enjoyed her job and her times in the wrens, stationed out in Malta.

We have some wonderful photos of her time in Malta, the places she visited and photos with her boss, Lord Mountbatten.  Whilst she was stationed out there, she met her future husband Peter Roberts, who was also in the Royal Navy and was on the same ship at the time as her cousin.  They all met one night in a bar in the Gut and the rest, as they say, is history.  She shared so many wonderful memories of the dances and days out at different beaches that she shared with friends and my Dad.  She always seemed to ooze glamour and some of her outfits I would love today.

When she came out of the wrens, she used the skills she had learnt to take on various roles in administration and secretarial positions.  They married and settled in Lincoln eventually and went on to have 3 children, Jane, Philip and Mandy (me)

She had a very happy retirement and was very family oriented. She often spoke fondly about he time in the wrens and especially Malta.  She kept in touch over the years with people she had been stationed with.
