FIRTH Jean Outfin (nee Williams)

11/08/1922 – 10/11/2024

As a former serving member of the WRNS,  it seems the day of Remembrance Sunday was a fitting and poignant date for her passing.

Alas, we do not have specific details of Jean’s rank/rate, but her daughters recall, from conversations with her, that she joined the WRNS 1941/42 and remained in the service until the end WW II.

Her role during the war was that of a telephone operator which took her to various postings including Wembury, Heybrook Bay, Salcombe (which hosted bases for both British and US forces preparing for the D-day landings) and from there to London and right up to Machrihanish (west coast of Scotland).

After the war, Jean joined the Wrens Association (Paignton/ Preston Branch).

She was so very proud to have served in the WRNS  (a picture of Dartmouth Royal Naval College adorns the hallway in the family home) and to have served her country.

Many thanks to Jean’s daughters Angela and Claire for this information.
