WESTERN APPROACHES MUSEUM, LIVERPOOL – AN EXCITING NEW PROJECT – TO INCLUDE A DEDICATED WRNS MUSEUM WITHIN ITS EXISTING LOCATION.
The Western Approaches Museum, situated near the River Mersey in Liverpool, tells the story of the designing and war-gaming to protect the Allied convoys crossing the Atlantic against the U-boat threat during WWII. Many of those involved in this planning were members of the WRNS.
The Museum has now kindly offered to remember these women by providing a dedicated WRNS Museum within its premises. This new WRNS Museum will not only cover the period of WWII but is intended to tell the full story of the WRNS from 1917 to 1993 (when it was disbanded) in order to educate school children and members of the public.
Currently the area for this new WRNS Museum in undergoing some structural alteration so will not be ready for a year or two. However, more importantly it will be the memorabilia and artefacts that will ensure its success. All items will be professionally catalogued, looked after with care and necessary preservation, and many will be put on display or carefully stored for ease of access.
The Western Approaches Museum and the WRNS Museum location in Liverpool means that it can be easily reached from all parts of the UK – and Liverpool is a City that provides many areas of interest together with its own seagoing history. Please look through your homes to contribute and share your own or your relatives life as a Wren. This is not just a one-off request but will be an on-going request! However, anything that is donated to Western Approaches will be permanent and they will not be accepting loans. Now let’s make this new WRNS Museum a resounding success.
Therefore, if anyone has any WRNS historical items – photographs, documents, notebooks, uniforms, hardware etc that requires a good home please forward them to:
