The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich visited a very special resident last week to celebrate a remarkable milestone: the 105th birthday of Elsie Vickers, a local World War II veteran and long-time borough resident.

Elsie, who lives in a care home in Thamesmead, served in the Women’s Royal Naval Services (Wrens) as a cook. After training she went to Glendower in North Wales, a DEMS (Defensively Equipped Merchant Ship) training centre. She rose to Petty Officer during her wartime service, with postings at Alsager, Wetherby (HMS Cabot/Demitrius), and Chatham.

Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich Councillor Linda Bird said: “It was an absolute honour to meet Elsie and help celebrate her incredible 105th birthday. Her wartime service is an inspiring example of bravery and dedication. With this year marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, it is especially important that we recognise the sacrifices made by Elsie and her generation. Their contribution to our country must never be forgotten.”

Surrounded by friends and care staff, Elsie was clearly touched by the attention and spoke fondly of her memories from the war years. The Greenwich branch of Wrens expressed deep appreciation to the Mayor and the council for recognising Elsie’s service and celebrating her extraordinary life.

The council continues to work closely with local organisations and community groups to uphold our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, which promises that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, along with their families, are treated fairly and with respect.
