International Women’s Day – Trustee Karen Elliot

Today, to mark International Women’s Day, we are highlighting just a small part of the vital effort, insight and pioneering spirit that our female members bring to the Royal Naval Association.

First up is Karen Elliot, social secretary of the City of Edinburgh branch, who was awarded a British Empire Medal in this year’s New Year Honours list.

Karen has been active in branch and area matters for the RNA since she left the Royal Navy in 1989, having served as a radar specialist.

She has a job in civvie street – as Business and Compliance Manager for Singula Decisions Ltd, and has a busy family life as well.

But her five years in the Mob sparked an enduring love for all things Naval, and she spends a good deal of her spare time working in support of veterans through various organisations in addition to the RNA, such as the Association of Wrens and the Royal British Legion.

Taking it one step further, she often represents these groups in Scottish forums and wider veteran and military organisations, engaging with politicians to ensure veterans are not forgotten, and that the RNA is at the heart of tri-Service life.

Karen was one of the main influences behind the highly-successful RNA annual National Conference in Perth in 2017, and she developed a template that allowed others following to replicate that successful formula – it has since been adopted as the RNA’s conference blueprint.
