For Black History Month, HMS King Alfred is looking at “William Brown”, the first Black women to serve in the RoyalNavy. In 1815 The Times wrote of her skilled service. The picture is HMS Queen Charlotte (later renamed HMS Excellent) on which she served
In this period, some women did serve in the Navy under false names, one being Hannah Snell the first female Royal Marine.
